SSD Write Performance – IOPS Confusion Due to Poor Benchmarking Techniques

چکیده

Over the last few years, the proliferation of solid state disk (SSD) based IO solutions triggered an entire benchmarking frenzy, comparing the throughput potential of SSD and hard disk drive (HDD) components, respectively. In most of these performance studies, little is known about the actual HW, OS, and SW setup, benchmark environment, benchmark tool, validation techniques used to asses the benchmark results, or even the actual workload distribution used to conduct the studies. Nevertheless, in most of these studies, compared to HDD drives, rather impressive IOPS SSD values are reported for read and write IO operations, respectively.

Buffer flush and address mapping scheme for flash memory solid-state disk

The flash memory solid-state disk (SSD) is emerging as a killer application for NAND flash memory due to its high performance and low power consumption. To attain high write performance, recent SSDs use an internal SDRAM write buffer and parallel architecture that uses interleaving techniques. In such architecture, coarse-grained address mapping called superblock mapping is inevitably used to e...

Towards cost-effective and high-performance caching middleware for distributed systems

One performance bottleneck of distributed systems lies on the hard disk drive (HDD) whose single read/write head has physical limitations to support concurrent I/Os. Although the solid-state drive (SSD) has been introduced for years, HDDs are still dominant storage due to large capacity and low cost. This paper proposes a caching middleware that manages the underlying heterogeneous storage devi...

Towards SSD-Ready Enterprise Platforms

High-performance solid state disks (SSDs) deliver a 2–3 orders of magnitude increase in I/O operations per second (IOPS) over hard disk drives (HDDs). Extreme-performance SSDs can produce up to 120,000 IOPS for random-access reads, taking as few as eight direct-attached SSDs to reach one million IOPS. However, today’s multi-core platforms have long been optimized for HDDs, leading to the questi...

Optimize write performance for DBMS on Solid State Drive

Solid State Drive (SSD) is believed to be the replacement for magnetic disk in computer systems. SSD is a complex storage device composed of flash chips, controller hardware, and proprietary software that together provide a block device interface via a standard interconnect. Comparing to its fast sequential read/write and random read operations, the random write on SSD is generally believed to ...

Nitro: A Capacity-Optimized SSD Cache for Primary Storage

For many primary storage customers, storage must balance the requirements for large capacity, high performance, and low cost. A well studied technique is to place a solid state drive (SSD) cache in front of hard disk drive (HDD) storage, which can achieve much of the performance benefit of SSDs and the cost per gigabyte efficiency of HDDs. To further lower the cost of SSD caches and increase ef...
